« Welcome! | Main | Posture and taking it for granted »
It doesn't matter how large our feet are, in relation to our overall height, they're pretty small. Even if we feel they are enormous and shoe shops don't have boats bigh enough, they are still very small compared to our height that is likely to be at least 1.5 and may well be over 2 metres. And having only two of them, means that we're pretty precarious. Compared to most creatures who have four, we may be right in thinking that nature has done us short. If we were to stand up and take a look down at our feet and see how far away they are from our heads, it's quite an alarming situation. Here we are, with the bulk of our weight high up with the centre of gravity just under our heart, it's easy to see that we have a real potential for falling over. Gravity has its effect on us the whole time whether we are aware of it or not, so it's important that we're in balance. Fortunately our survival instincts kick in and are taking constant action to ensure that our musculature is adjusting to the needs of the second as we move around, just to make sure that we remain upright and don't fall. After all, if we do, it hurts! But it's reassuring to know that our bodies are designed to cope with being on two feet, that is, if we don't get into bad postural habits that upset our balance!
