« Only two small feet to stand on | Main | Craig is new Bond »
It seems that the only times we might give our posture any thought at all, is when we get an ache, stiffness or pain in our back or neck. Otherwise we take it for granted and trust that our body will see us through. It's probably true to say that in today's highly sophisticated and technologically advanced society we give no more thought to our posture than our caveman ancestors did a million years ago. Yet we expect to be able to sit at a desk for up to ten hours a day, multitask on the computer, phone and in meetings. It's really no wonder we end up with problems.
As humans we have evolved over time to balance on two feet and to use our hands with dexterity and skill, but unfortunately we often do so repetitively for hours. This way of life is far removed from the more primitive and varied lifestyle involving running and hunting that our ancestors did even up to as recently as a thousand years ago. Our way of life and the expectations we put on ourselves physically is advancing way faster than our physique is evolving to cope with such changes. Evolution take many millenia, not decades or centuries.
