There was a TV programme last night called 'Making Slough Happy'; Slough being a small town not far from London that is considered to have a population that is as unhappy as any town possibly can be....even compared to China. The premise made is that money, wealth, or material possessions cannot bring happiness and if they do, it's short lived. However, it was conceded that a modest level of wealth and modern day trappings can help, but thereafter, the extras that we so often see as desirable, rarely bring lasting happiness.
No, they reported that happiness can be achieved by indulging in simple pleasures such as talking to friends and spouses for 15 minutes per day, giving to others, planting and growing flowers, watching 50% less TV, smiling, remembering at least 5 blessings every day among other things on their 'Happiness Manifesto'. And I thought 'Great, I'll do more of that.' This is all good.... as far as it goes.
