Today is National Stress Awareness Day. That's good, isn't it! So there we are....
Today is when everyone is encouraged to note how stressed we all are, and to find ways of letting it go. And very sensible it is too. We're often we're told that modern living is a main cause of stress, and it's true to some extent, but not completely. Life is so busy and we put pressure on ourselves to enhance our lifestyle....bigger and faster cars, bigger home, expensive clothes and good schools for our kids. We work and socialise hard.
All the things we do are not necessarily conducive to stress; it's the way we handle them as individuals that either causes stress or does not. Indeed some of us can handle a great many demanding things in life and not suffer whereas others manage far fewer. We are indeed all individuals with our own unique make-up, attributes and qualities.
Doing less is not always the answer, as it is our own physical condition and approach to life that can affect whether we feel stress or not. We can reduce the number of stressful activities we do, and still feel stress because it's our 'way'. It would be better therefore if we attended to how we're functioning so we can cope better.
So what can we do? Yes, we need to ensure we eat a balanced diet, drink 2 litres of water a day, get sufficient sleep and have time off to relax, laugh and exercise; all helpful and important considerations if we are to remain healthy. But there are other important considerations that contribute to our sense of stress that are often over looked.
