« Thinking to help our physical condition | Main | Fighting the cold »
I'm one who enjoys writing Christmas cards to my friends, contacts and business associates, and it's a good thing because I've got quite a number to do. But with such a task, it's important to ensure that it doesn't become a pain in the neck, literally. Sitting to write at a desk or table involves so much and can be quite demanding on our posture and it's inevitable that our daily postural habits will come into play in this activity as much as any other. We're likely to stiffen, slouch and hunch over the table.
When we lean forward to write, I find it's so important that I come forward from my hips and not round my back. To help with this and gain sufficient stability in my back, I think of lengthening, leading with my head so it's 'going' forward and upwards. Leading with the head is something that all vertebrates do, and we did as young children before posture habits set in. It's an 'intention' (not effort) to lead with our heads upwards that stimulates our postural muscles to support us without perceived effort. When we lead with the head going forward and upwards we will find that we can sit for a long time without strain.
