Emotions and posture

I was reminded once again this morning as I rode my motorcycle in to work at dawn, how our emotions and posture are so inextricably linked.

While riding along the north edge of Hyde Park facing the lightening east sky I decided to free my neck a bit and think upwards so I wasn't hunching over the handlebars. As my body became more upright, I also became more aware of the width of space between my upper arms and my chest being more open. With this came a lovely release of little tensions, and with a deep sigh and I noticed my mood lifting. Not that I was in a bad mood or depressed in anyway before, but I got a lovely light sense of euphoria! smiling inside ones crash helmet could be seen as a bit mad. Maybe it is, but I'm happy and don't care.

It's interesting how postural fixation and emotions get trapped together. Sometimes if we're suddenly relieved of a problem or a stressful situation is resolved, we may feel our muscles relaxing to some degree. It can happen both ways. But I find that by giving a little thought to my physical condition, I can help myself in a practical way. By releasing and inhibiting unnecessary tensions, while also ensuring that I'm lengthening in stature,,,,without effort, I can bring myself up to my full stature and positively help myself cope with the day's events, no matter what gets thrown at me. It could be called survival, but I prefer to think of it as helping myself function and perform to my best ability.

It's a great way to start the day.
