I have to admit to being in total awe of the new camera equipment used to film parts of Planet Earth presented by Sir David Attenborough. New technology originally designed for use at times of conflict, enables a helicopter fitted with this remotely controlled camera to film close-up details of activities on ground from up to 1.5 kilometers away. This programme is the first to use such equipment for filming nature.
The subjects are unaware that they are being filmed, so in the case of the BBC programme Planet Earth, we are able to watch previously un-filmed and unseen aspects of predators stalking and chasing their victim, then eventually at the kill. It means the animals remain undisturbed and able to carry on with their lives without intrusion.
These new filming techniques are particularly remarkable when we see packs of wolves organising their maneuvers to stalk unwary victims. The high viewpoint from the helicopter allows many animals to be seen at the same time working as an organised team. It's easy to see the benefits of such equipment in times of human conflict.
The amazing thing, from a more technical point of view, is the camera's ability to zoom in from such a great distance with massive magnification, and the close-up image is as steady and un-shaken as though the camera was tripod mounted on the ground.
Toys for the boys.... and a programme not to miss.
