PSC culture

drinking-glass-of-water.jpgI was interested to hear that radio presenters Tracy and Claire on Spin 1038, Dublin were into PSC. It's the growing body culture of people who are pushing themselves hard. Long hours at work, body-active regimes and hectic social agendas can stretch us to the limit. If we go over the limit we burn out. Now, there is a move in certain circles to ensure burn out doesn't spoil our hard earned lifestyle. Clued up people are making sure their body copes with the strain.

PSC is so simple and most aspects take just two minutes with almost instant benefits.

I've written about PSC, or Positve Self Care before. PSC is the attitude of caring for the body and mind that has to cope with the pounding regime that demanding jobs and stress put on us. It seems there is a reversal of attitude, rather than stoking up on caffeine and ignoring our bodily basic needs, big earners and movers are taking pains to ensure they can maintain the pressure long term.

So, instead of relying on the occasional exotic holiday to restore the batteries, there is a growing number of people who are into PSC to keep their body and mind functioning well on a daily basis. it's so simple, takes no time at all and most of it is free.

As it happens, most of the main elements of PSC make an acronym so it's simple to remember. PSC gives you POWER. P for Posture, O for oxygen (good breathing), W for water ( drink 2-3 litres a day), E for exercise and R for rest. Along with those there is Nutrition, so eat healthy food including fresh fruit and veg which are vital for vitamins, and also use postive thinking to maximise chances of being successful.

There isn't much in this that costs any more money than we spend normally. For example, we all have to eat; choosing energy-giving nutrition is no more expensive than junk food. Water comes out of the tap, and bottled water isn't too costly. Rest means get sufficient night-time sleep so we're not deprived, along with having a 10 minute power nap after lunch avoids fatigue. It all helps keep us alert. Exercise just requires us to get out there and do it, and posture involves getting out of bad habits of slouching and stooping so we function well physically. Oxygen is there in the atmosphere, so we just need to remember to breathe. If you feel that the air is too polluted in cities to breathe deeply, you're likely to do more harm to yourself by under-breathing, than you will by letting your own immune system and natural defences cope. Oxygen is essential fuel for muscles, brain and every bodily function, so you've got to get enough. Also, by thinking postively you are more likely to achieve your goals, just as sports people use visualisation techniques to win and set new records.

PSC also involves being sensible about the amount of alcohol and caffeine we drink. Extra water is drunk to ensure these diuretics don't undermine us. It's the attitude of taking extra good care of the body and mind when we're putting ourselves under pressure.

PSC is so simple, and takes no time at all. It's interesting to see this new attitude of Positive Self Care happening now. But it's a good thing and will ultimately lead to fewer ailments later in life.

'Prevention is better than cure', as they say.

:-)
