I have clearly been leading a sheltered life, having believed until yesterday that Extreme Ironing was doing ten shirts in one session, but now understand it's doing it at high altitude on a mountain cliff face, or even several metres under water. Where have I been? Following this lead, I discover today that there is also a keen following for many other activities such as Extreme cooking (on a cliff face), Extreme Gardening (in the Sahara Desert), Extreme Art (for which you set yourself on fire to paint a picture), Extreme Tennis (on the wings of an aircraft) as well as the more obvious activities of Skydiving, Extreme Skiing and Skating. There is also Extreme Knitting and Extreme Blogging from snow capped mountains and soon in outer space. Whatever next?
As a man of an age (mid-fifties) when many feel the need to prove themselves and retain some cred and macho standing, what can I do to bolster the sagging image? Extreme Alexander Technique? Or does getting up at 5.00am to do violin practise qualify as Extreme? It's extremely early, but pales against the virtuoso violinist Maxim Vengerov who I believe attempted to play a violin during free-fall from an aircraft but was unsuccessful as the bow was blown out of his hand by the wind. Or how about Extreme Christmas Shopping, buying presents out of season? Been there, done that.....sad or what? Well it does save queuing!
Do you have any extreme activities.....that you can talk about? What about Extreme Washing-up, or Extreme Stamp Collecting? How these can be made dangerous and competitive is just waiting to be discovered.... You could start an international challenge.
