As Scarlett Johansson bedazzles audiences with her smouldering screen presence and ability to convey volumes in a sidelong glance, she is likened to Monroe and also Bacall with her husky voice and strong opinions. Her latest performance in The Black Dahlia, evokes the languorous era of Veronica Lake with her voluptuous lips, perfect eyebrows and strawberry blonde hair. At last it seems, according to the press, Hollywood has a new star who radiates all the qualities associated with the traditional silver screen icon.
With a string of successes from her career breaking role as the injured horse riding fourteen year old in Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer to her Golden Globe nomination for Girl with a Pearl Earring in 2003 she has lept to fame. Now with twenty films to her name, her latest screen outing is described by one critic as "sexually overwhelming" and Scarett Johansson is named "sexiest woman alive" by FHM earlier this year. But for all her attractive looks, which many would say are no more than thousands of others, it's the smouldering presence and energy that she brings to the screen that has us captivated.
So she has talent....and looks. But this cannot be the only reason Scarlett Johansson has achieved such heights of stardom. The Times quotes, " I look at all of my friends who are incredibly talented struggling actors who can't seem to break through. I think luck has played a huge role in my life - more so than skill."
Ever since she was eight she has yearned to be a star. Named by her mother after Vivien Leigh's character in Gone with the Wind, she also has her support and determination. Together "we've utilised every resource we've had to try to think of ways to get things done". Their toughness comes through "If things aren't happening the way we need them to be".
But there is more. Scarlett says as a young child she dreamt of becoming an actress, inspired by her mother's knowledge of film. "I wanted to be Judy Garland in Meet me in St Louis. I wanted to be Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame. And I pursued it and I wanted it more than anything."
And that's the crux of the matter. To repeat....."I dreamt of being an actress.......I wanted it more than anything."
This is the lesson...for me. Here we have a wonderful example of someone knowing what they want and wanting and dreaming of it so much she has made it her reality. Sure she is talented. Sure she has had help....but that's also because she wanted it. When we truly want something, events, people, opportunities fall our way, appearing as luck "I feel damned lucky." she says. But what she thought about is what she got. She had the vision, she dreamt it, longed for it, wished for it and believed she could have it. 'What you think is what you get'.
Believe it and get it. Simple. It's just that most of us have a background of self limiting thoughts that undermine us. We're taught we need to work hard for a living.....so therefore we will have to. That is what we believe. We can also develop limited attitudes about our self worth. But if we can change how we think, and find that sparkling inner wish that makes your heart skip a beat, and think about it lots, and avoid the negative inner-talk, then there's a good chance you can have it. Your dream can become your reality.
Thanks for the lesson, Scarlett.
