« We can all become great at something... | Main | Giving of presents »
One of my clients told me yesterday that she has decided to start having piano lessons again after a gap of many years. She had managed to get to grade 8 as a 16 year old, but stopped as her teacher lost interest in her when she no longer wanted to do exams and only play for fun. I ask you, what possible other reason can we have to do anything?!
I just love to hear when people decide to do something they did when young. What is it about 'getting older' that makes us go back to our childhood interests. I certainly did about two years ago when I took up the violin again after a gap of forty years. But I'm a little concerned about this trend when I see my 90 year old neighbour reciting nursery rhymes!
But it's so good to do something that is creative and stretches ones abilities.....not to the degree that we're daunted, but that allows for various stages of success and satisfaction. Something that's challenging and creative can provide a wonderful means of enjoyment and fulfilment in life.
Did you have a passion as a youngster that you no longer participate in? What were your interests? Do you ever think sometimes that it would be great to do it again? For me, I used to do cycling as a passion throughout my teens. I'd cycle up to 100 miles a day through the mountains of Scotland, along narrow winding single-track roads with views of the sea-lochs and barely a car in sight. Those were the days when I'd do a trip before Sunday lunch and Dad would ask what I'd been doing all morning (probably thinking I'd been wasting my time) only to hear that I'd done a round trip of the Trossachs through Calander and Aberfoyle, seen the Buzzards flying and fishermen casting their lines on the loch-side, the dew sparkling on the grass and heather and the sun casting long shadows of trees, the autumn colours, all set off against the rich blue autumn sky. I want to do that again sometime! It wasn't creative in the true sense of the word, but it absorbed me completely. It was a passion.
It's good to get passionate about something (other than TV!). It's good to get passionate. That's when life gets to be just great. There are clues to be had in our childhood. Clues can lead to the solving of the puzzle.....what is this life all about ......for you?
For me, it's doing something that I love. Alexander Technique, playing the violin, photography with traditional black and white printing, writing books and walking in the country. Friends and partner see me in between!
