Naughty? Yes please.

tn_allchocoslicegail.jpg'A little of what you fancy does you good', and how I've enjoyed remembering that saying during the last month or so since I started my diet.

In January after weeks of absolutely too many (not enough!) chocolates and cakes, I decided to lose a few pounds. Not that I'm particularly overweight, but I was around 10lb heavier than I wanted to be. That's not a huge amount to lose, but on the other hand, it's not inconsiderable. I often compare the weight of our heads to about 5 bags of sugar. Try picking up that many 1 kilo bags of sugar at the supermarket and you'll see what I mean. I know some people want to lose more weight than that....and I can sympathise. Such an endeavour takes determination and time.

And when we've lost some weight as I have....around 7lb so far, where does it go? I 'know' and understand we burn it up in energy... but where does it go? I've lost 7 lb....a little over 3 bags of sugar in weight and I can't find it anywhere. It's not at home, in a cupboard or lying on the front step. And I don't remember dropping it in the street. Evaporated? Phuutt!? Gone.

But getting back to my main point... Being on a diet I guess, means that we're following an eating plan. So I have planned to have something naughty but nice.....once a week. Yes, my diet for the week includes some chocolate and a cake. Not a lot, but a bit. It also includes a bag of potato crisps! Oh yes, bio-organic-hand-reared-free-range potato crisps. And if I can't get that, then it's just a bag of chips. And I also have other naughties if I fancy them. but the key point is....only once a week.

I call it the 'Once-a-Week Plan'. And what does this do? It helps prevent insanity during protracted periods of abstinence from naughties in general and when another carrot just doesn't do it for me. And how good is that? Women in France are famous for their svelte figures yet they indulge in Foie Gras pate, cakes, wine and you-name-it. But they do it once a week, and for the other days they're eat about one lettuce leaf a day.

But I must admit, having been on a Food Combining Diet for about a month, where I separate carbohydrates and proteins into different meals so they digest better, and eating less carbo anyway and more veg, my taste buds are changing and I actually enjoy the new regime. I don't have such a sweet tooth. Yes, I eat less too, maybe 10% less in total and no cakes or chocolates....except for when I decide to have one! And that's once a week. However, my 'need' for such wickedly naughty things is reducing...not that I had an addiction or anything serious....just a 'little liking'. And so I shall continue. Yum. I think women in France have definitely got it right.

:-)
