Best Taxi Driver

Is'nt it just great when we meet people unexpectedly in the course of our normal day who inspire us and not only bring a smile to our face but also help to remind us that there is a lot of goodwill out there in the world? My friend Sam Westmacott tells this story.

Sam was late for a flight in Sydney and the driver took her expertly through the traffic telling her,

“Anyone over 85 years old travels in my cab for free” (She wondered if she’d had that bad a day!).

“It began the night when I picked up a little old lady who wasn’t over 5ft at 11 pm out at Bondi beach. She sat on the edge of her seat tense and nervous worrying about whether we’d catch up her bus. I asked her where she’d been and she said it was the girl’s night out at the disco and as usual they’d stayed on too late. She said she’d missed her bus and that on the bus it only cost her $1 to get back to her home two suburbs away.

I asked her if they had to pay $1 for each ride and she angrily told me no it was $1 to ride all day if you were over 65.

She was tense and worried. I had to drive her home. The fare was $15. She took out her purse and scrabbled around for money and found the fare. She gave it to me. I gave her $14 change. She was half in and half out of the taxi. She stiffened with suspicion. She was frightened. I said go on, it's on me. She smiled and the look on her face was worth much more than $15 . Since then I don’t charge anyone over 85! I believe that if you give, one day you’ll receive. Maybe not right away but giving’s the way to go.”

Sam over-tipped him...very well. She also made her flight.

Thanks for telling this story Sam, I'll remember to give freebies whenever I can. It's just so good to see people smile. And you never know when you could benefit from a favour yourself.

:-)
