An instinct for poise

Isn't good posture just something that looks upright in the mirror? Such a view is understandable because that's often how we see ourselves, or more likely we see the 'lack' of good posture in the reflection of our bedroom mirror, or in the shop window as we pass. But posture is not a thing in itself, independent of our life, our health, our sense of self. It is something that affects everything in our life, from how we feel about ourselves to how we function as a highly sophisticated bio-mechanical vertebrate. It affects how we swing the golf club, run to catch a bus, our confidence and ability to cope with pregnancy without getting back pain.

Good poise is fundamental to our overall health, and our ability to achieve our full potential in life. It affects everything we do. But although it is our birthright, we begin to lose the free, expansive quality from the age of three or four. We all have the natural instinct for healthy poise from birth and it remains with us throughout our whole life; it just needs to be revived. You can begin to revive your own natural poise now, by consciously eliminate harmful postural habits such as stiffening your neck or hunching your shoulders. You can choose to quit such habits. Get rid of them and our body will function so much better.

It’s not possible to ‘do’ good poise and you can’t ‘do’ good health, but you can encourage the right conditions in your body where good health and poise 'happen'. If you stop the wrong things, the right thing will look after itself. Your body’s tendency is towards health and well being. It is by and large self healing and if you create the right environment where unwanted strain and harmful conditions are removed, your body will be better able to restore itself to health and vitality.

I encourage anyone interested in helping themselves to use the principles of the Alexander Technique. Some of these have been outlined here in this blog over the last year or so, but you will find that if you are able to have some lessons from a qualified teacher, then these will help your progress significantly. Personal one-to-one lessons will ensure that you interpret the guidelines correctly and appropriately for your needs.

It is my belief that we can all change and improve our lives and even excel beyond our expectations. We can improve our health, our sense of well being, how we interact with others, and allow our full natural beauty and potential to be expressed. We can perform better at any activity we undertake. Changing your poise can enhance every aspect of your life. And the person in control of your life is you – no one else. It is for you to make your choices.

Improving your poise brings with it a natural confidence – a real confidence. You develop the strength and belief in yourself to do what you want to do and not just what you have to do. You can choose how you want to be and how you want to perform. You can choose to change your life, or you can choose to leave it mainly as it is and enhance certain aspects that are not quite ideal.

Even if you believe that you’re already doing well, it’s probable that you could make refinements and improvements to many aspects of your life by enhancing your posture.

We need to look at where we began, as children with an instinct for poise that provides the ability to excel at virtually anything you do. We all need that free, loose and upright quality to be at our best. And the great thing is that it is still available to us....even if we're over a hundred years old. Rediscover this dormant instinct by removing some ingrained habits. Give your life a kick start and watch how you can change if you wish, in almost every endeavour and every way. If you revive your natural poise it will help change your life. It has done so for me, and it can for you too. The choice is there for you to take, and should you do so, you may be surprised at just how wonderful you truly are, and how great your life can be.
