"You should have been there, it was great. You would have enjoyed yourself!" I was told. OK, meeting up with old friends and joining in the activities of the workshop would have been great. I would also probably have learned something. 'You should have been there, it was great'. Are my friends trying to make me feel bad...that I'd missed out and wasted an opportunity?
But I too had a great time. While they were all having a great and wonderful time, I was also experiencing the best of weekends, walking in the country with my dearest friend, making photographic images of my favourite subjects, playing my favourite violin in the morning and relishing in the new sound that I appear to be able to make indicating that I'm making progress...great! How many times can one 'have a great time' at the same time?
To my knowledge a moment exists only once....in that moment. And if we're enjoying ourselves in that moment, then we can't ask for much more. We can choose to enjoy ourselves in any singular moment by participating in one of a variety of activities, or being entertained by others, by learning, experiencing new things, meeting and sharing with friends, by achievement in our endeavours. But how many of these things can we ever do at once? I believe, only one.
Multitasking, where we try to do several things at the same time has interesting implications. We may listen to music, talk to our friend on the phone, do the ironing and eat our favourite ice cream all at the same time, but research shows that although we 'think' we're doing things concurrently, actually our brain is only capable of doing one thing at a time. We switch between activities, believing that we're doing several, but actually the other activities are 'on hold' for fractions of a second. I blogged on Multitasking a while ago.
If you're enjoying yourself, you are never missing out. Try and enjoy this moment. Find something about whatever you're doing that you can take pleasure in....doing a good job, completing the task, making a nicer job than is ultimately necessary, excelling, giving to others, doing favours, making love with others, smile.....just enjoy.
"You should have been there!" No. You should be where you are right now. Enjoy every moment. Now join as many of those individual happy moments up together, one after the other. This is a happy life.
