Do something different

2006081908117_pg1_zo.jpg Hit it Kevin!

Do you ever feel that sometimes you're stuck in a groove? (I nearly said 'rut', but that sounds so awful!) Doing similar things most days inevitably affects us, creatures of habit as we are. If you're anything like me, you'll find yourself doing, eating, choosing, behaving, walking, talking, thinking, feeling similar things as you did yesterday, or the day before. And of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing similar things if they are serving us well, but it's maybe not so good if the reason we're doing it is just because we did it yesterday.

Today I'm going to do something different. Now, I'm not quite sure what that will be....it may be go visit somebody unexpectedly, buy a crazy thing, behave out of character and surprise everyone (we may have some 'interesting' Alexander Technique sessions today!) or take a detour on the way home, organize a party, book a flight to somewhere I stick a pin in a map while blindfolded, fast all day and drink only water, smile (no, I do a lot of that), get my hair dyed (I couldn't do that!!) or something else. I'll think about this....but not for too long as I'll lose the spontaneity. Indeed, maybe this 'thing should be done instantly on a whim.

Why don't you choose something that you would not normally attempt and decide that you're just going to do it? Maybe make it something that you feel is really demanding and a stretch. This may be making a difficult telephone call, asking someone out for a date, buying yourself an indulgent present, being nice to someone you've argued with, jumping from an aircraft at 12,000ft and skydiving(I can personally recommend this!). When we've done something that's must unusual, demanding, out of character or special we can feel really great. We'll probably be floating on air afterwards and this may open us up for other adventures or changes in our life. If on the off-chance you don't succeed in your endeavour, look at how you did it and see if you might do it differently next time.

And finally, something that's really important. If we do something that's pretty demanding, difficult, scary, challenging, confronting, nerve-racking, out-of-character, brilliant, wonderful or down-right-mad, then remember to CONGRATULATE YOURSELF. Go and give yourself a treat, that is unless your challenge was to buy yourself a treat anyway!! Maybe this is your challenge. If you've done something absolutely wonderful, won, achieved, succeeded, changed, passed, completed or even just done your best no matter what the result.........go and treat yourself to something special that you'd not normally do. Why? Because it's good to be rewarded, and particularly by ourselves. Self acknowledgement is not being egotistical or big-headed. When we acknowledge, treat or congratulate ourselves (or someone else) wholeheartedly, it feels great. It's the final stage of the 'project cycle'. When we're thanked, congratulated or acknowledged properly for our efforts, it encourages us to go and do it again, or something else that's demanding or wonderful. Always give yourself a treat. And do so with a smile.

Let's go and do something different today! :-)
