If our eyes are the Window to our soul, then they can be pretty well relied upon to tell us a lot about the person, or more accurately how they are experiencing life. And when we look around in central London on the bus, in the underground, in shops, we can see many people in a state of anxiety, pressure, boredom, fatigue, depression or stress. Naturally this is not earth-shattering news, but our emotions are so very clearly reflected in our facial expression. Indeed, the term 'facial expression' is what it is, the external expression of what's going on inside. How many appear happy and calm? We can count this number using very few fingers.
When we meet someone who has a lively, gentle face, whose sparkling eyes are relaxed and even with a degree of mirth, they can be so very attractive. Laughter is the best medicine and I'm a firm believer in having a good laugh every day...around 4 minutes a day is great for reducing stress and enhancing health. It's even been known for people to laugh themselves well from serious illnesses. (Did you know that children can laugh 400-600 times a day, but adults rarely afford a chuckle?)
Laughing eyes are a characteristic that cannot be faked. We instinctively know if someone is just pulling a face, fixing their muscles in a mould, been botoxed-out of any possible facial expression or just pretending. Eyes say so much, and it would be wonderful if more of the people we meet could radiate such happy and contented calmness. It makes the world a better place. Maybe we can start with ourselves.
Victor Hugo said, "I like the laughter that opens the lips and the heart - that shows at the same time pearls and the soul." And I would humbly like to add, "I like the soul whose eyes show laughter from the heart."
The smile needs to come from the heart. When we're living in our heart, we will be doing what we love most and loving what we do; that may just be loving, because that's what we 'do'. We just love, who we are, what we do, appreciating our surroundings, grateful for what we've got, enjoying the people around and loving just being alive. Being in love is a condition we can experience without needing a special person to be the catalyst. See Emotioal Release. And when we're in such a state, we exude and radiate such wellness, happiness, contentedness, that we could probably give no better thing to the people we come in contact, than the smile in our eyes and mouth. It's a great infection and let's pass it on. .
I like people with laughter in their eyes, as it comes from the heart. I also like people who do not have laughter in their eyes, because they could........ we all could. We all can. A smile is a wonderful thing to give away as it is usually returned. A smile is a wonderful thing to receive as it is usually returned.
My blog today is really a reminder to myself of the life I seek to lead to my best ability. If you share the same views and wish to join me, then I'm very happy for your company. The thought of this makes me smile......smiling in my eyes. A bit more of this and I'll have laughter in my eyes.
Have a great weekend. :-)

Dear Biped in the Chilterns,
I really enjoyed your thoughts on smiling [part of th reason I am against Botox is that it renders people's faces bland and emotionless]. I also thought your quote 'when we are living in our heart, we will be doing what we love most and loving what we do' very inspirational.
Thanks Mimi. I always enjoy your lovely smile when you visit for an Alexander Technique session. Your French neighbours are blessed! Noel
