I believe there's a lot to be said for having a vision.
While acceptance of where we are, our situation, circumstances and environment can bring contentment so we can 'enjoy' the moment, there is nothing wrong with having a 'vision' of a life, situation or achievement that you'd love to experience.
Do you like watching movies? I do. Watching a movie transports us for a while into a different realm and we get to experience situations outside of our normal life. But while we're watching this movie, we have no doubts about where we are. It's not that we are rejecting our current situation or 'living in a dream' as we have purposely chosen to sit down and watch this movie, be it on the sofa with a DVD or in the cinema. Watching this movie is something we've elected to do, then afterwards we'll go and do something else.
While reading a novel, we are transported to another situation and with every page turned we enter into another 'world' that progressively takes us through the story towards the concluding last page. But while we're reading this book, we know where we are; we're sitting reading, be it at home or on the train.
OK, now let's do it differently; we can write our own movie script, write our own novel. But we don't need to 'write' this down on paper, although a few notes might be great to remind us. The main difference is that we are the writer, director, actor/actress, costume designer, make-up artist, hair stylist, and producer. We can do all this instantly of we choose, just as you may watch the most vivid 3D Imax film on screen; see yourself as the lead character vividly portrayed, acting out your 'dream'.
Sit back and give just a few moments to see yourself living the life you'd ultimately like to have, put yourself in the situation where you are achieving that ultimate success, enjoying the loving romance, driving that wonderful sports car, caring for your roses in your own cottage garden, playing with your baby,....see yourself doing/being/living/enjoying whatever is your fancy. This is not escapism from life any more than watching the movie or reading the good book. It's you setting up you future life experiences.
‘Your imagination is your preview of your life’s coming attractions,’ Albert Einstein.
The way we expect life to be is pretty much how we're going to experience it. At least that's my belief. I'm frequently reminded of this when something turns up for me, or something happens and then I realise that I had thought about such a situation some time previously. It seems to make a great deal of sense, that if this is the way it all seems to work and although I may not fully understand 'how' it works, then I may as well facilitate things working out in my favour!
This is not 'escapism'. For me it's forward planning!
So I don't know about you, but I'm going to have a great day today! Yep! And I know what I 'expect' to happen next year. :-)
My wage
I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store;
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial's hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have paid.
