I believe anyone can conquer fear
by doing the things he fears to do,
provided he keeps on doing them
until he gets a record of
successful experiences behind him.
Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884-1962 First Lady of the United States of America, writer and Diplomat
July 2007 was a very special month for my dear friend Jochen.
For much of his childhood and early adult years Jochen had both a keen interest in flying and a chronic fear of it which was handed down by his mother who had an extreme paranoia towards aircraft and flying. Jochen's situation shows how any of us can easily pick up on other people's emotions; at such a young age we are particularly vulnerable and impressionable. Jochen's fear of flying had nothing to do with any personal experience; he had simply 'learnt' this fear by example and it was sufficient to make him extremely uncomfortable in an aircraft for most of his early years. Courageous in many ways, outgoing, lively, great fun, fluent in five languages, intelligent, clever and successful in almost anything he turned his hand to, Jochen would make all efforts to avoid flying in aircraft by any means possible, despite having a keen interest in aviation.

Eventually he found the courage to tackle his fear and follow his dreams… A few years ago he decided to take flying lessons. He started flying twin seater aircraft, he sat and passed exam after exam. He got over his fear of flying very quickly and decided to take it further. He changed his job so that he could manage more flying time and passed more exams. At the beginning of the year he gave up his full-time job completely to move to southern Spain and do intensive daily flying to pass even more exams.

July 2007 was a very special month for Jochen. It was the month that he became a fully qualified commercial pilot, soon able to fly the twin engined jets that will take you and I on holiday and around the world. He had a vision. He stuck to it and he's got there.
Congratulations, Jochen!
