Just another one...

With a sigh and groan we hold up our hand and say "No thank you!" to yet another chocolate when invited but as the gift-bearer stands their ground, strong in determination that we truly do actually need another chocolate truffle, sure in mind that we are now firmly addicted after weeks of indulgence, we give in to temptation and whimper, "Oh all right then, just one more. Thank you!"

We went to the supermarket yesterday on our return from holidaying in Sheffield and the Derbyshire Peak District and were delighted to see how quiet the store was, with trolley-free aisles wide enough for trucks to pass...all except the 'Sale' chocolate racks where 'dated' truffles and boxes of mixed selections lay in wait for eager hands. And I must admit to a little surprise, as I nurse my ever-so-slightly expanded waist around the food counters to see hands snatching needily at the last remaining chocolate boxes and trolleys being filled as though they were the last on earth. One could not help notice that those clamouring for the last Milk Tray had a very slight resemblance to a truffle themselves. I vowed to quit.

There have been the occasional period in my life when just a few more of the rich, dark stuff has led to such a sweet tooth that craves for another and yet another, so the consumption goes up....and up.... to the point I've thought "That's it! No more". I have then eliminated anything sweet from my diet for weeks. If you've had this experience yourself, then you'll know this can be quite hard at first as the pangs of 'need' scream out and chocolate demons inside seek to satisfy their craving, but gradually and as 'cold turkey' plays its part we hunger no more for the sweet stuff and find more satisfaction in simple savouries, fruit and veg. After two weeks of abstinence the pangs are less pronounced and even moderately sweet things no longer seem so appealing. A month later and we're positively on the savoury route and any form of sugar is sickly.

And just when we think we've cracked it having lost several pounds in weight and we have no inclination to have any chocolates ever again, some bright spark opens up a box and offers one and despite our insistence of "No thanks." and they continue to hold out the box in wait for us to succumb despite our best intentions. "OK, just the one, it's a month since I had one, you know." and our will power crumbles.... After one, comes two .....and here we go again, around around the merry-go-round of 'yessing and 'no-ing', consuming and abstaining.

It was FM Alexander who said "We can change the habits of a lifetime if we just use our brains." He was referring of course to posture. I do know he did indulge in fine food but I'm not sure if that extended to consumption of chocolate. I'll just have to have another one as I research this.....

Happy New Year.

:-)
