We've made arrangements to go to Scotland in April to stay in my brother's newly built weekend cottage on the side of Loch Fyne. It will be the first time in a very long while since all my immediate family got together....and I am looking forward to it immensely. We haven't seen their new cottage yet but I do know the area very well having cycled around there as a lad many times and I doubt it has changed much in the last 40 years! It's a beautiful location.
So on this dull and grey January morning, when the greyness seems interminable and we long for sunny days, I have something to look forward to and I must say it certainly does lift one's spirits.
Having something to look forward to doesn't mean that we're not 'living in the present. Far from it, the act of 'looking forward' is done from 'where we are' right now. It is not 'denying the present' but having an idea in mind that we anticipate will be fun and take us away for a well-earned break when the time comes. it lifts ones spirits.
It's such a good thing to always have something to look forward to as it gives us a 'lift' right here and now. So we get on with our day and all that this means in terms of work, responsibilities and challenges as well as looking at the greyness outside, but we can do so with a little fillip in our hearts, a bubble of enthusiasm and maybe a little skip in our step.
FM Alexander said that we should always have something to look forward to. He knew what it did for our posture and poise. Instead of 'pulling down', stooping in our gloom, weary and tired of the daily activities (but I hope we are not!); by having something to look forward to we look up, become more sprightly. We are lifted in our spirits and also in our body. We become more ebullient, joyful and with our newly found exuberance our physique comes up tall too. OK, I won't get carried away with all this as I know you're thinking, it's only a short holiday in Scotland! But what if you had just been told you'd won the lottery and you were planning a world trip, how would you feel? Pretty amazing. Get that feeling in your heart right now, even with simple things. Feel how good it feels to feel good! Sense that childlike anticipation for going to the beach...or whatever. You can create it just by your choice in how you feel!
I'm not saying that 'having something to look forward to will cure you of a back pain....but it might go a long way in helping! It also helps us feel so good our general health can improve...as well as our relationships with others!
Oh yes, I'm looking forward to my break away in Scotland.....along with as many other things I can think of!
