Nature's sounds

With wind blowing so strongly we found it near impossible to walk on the high exposed hills of Derbyshire during our trip at New Year. We found the going far easier and less bleak by walking a few valleys or 'dales' as they're called in the Peak District. And invariably there are streams or rivers running through these dales, bubbling along on their merry path, playing host to Kingfishers, Herons and Trout alike. With good boots our feet remained warm and dry despite the wet weather.

There is nothing like the sound of a bubbling brook or stream as it tumbles, swirls and chases itself through the rocks to form whirlpools where sticks and leaves gather. It is all at the same time, loud, gurgling and rushing, yet peaceful and relaxing at the same time. If I were standing in Oxford Street, London and listen to traffic noise of the same volume, I would wish to escape away into a park, but here in Derbyshire, or anywhere for that matter where the sounds are of nature, it is quite different. It may be sounds of rushing streams, sea tumbling on a stony shore or wind rustling trees, the sounds help us relax, probably as they connect us with nature, but not so where the noise is man-made, of machinery, traffic or aircraft.

A few days of walking alongside such streams where their sounds are cold, fresh and clean, we feel refreshed ourselves, relaxed and looking forward to returning to the sounds of a roaring log fire with a hot mug of tea in hand. Yes, it's lovely to get out and walk the country and it's lovely to return. As a dog is happy to go for its walk and always happy to come home, wagging its tail on both outward and return journeys, we were no different.

And while I'm always happy to go on holiday, I also enjoy returning to my practice where I look forward to doing lots of Alexander Technique this year. Aahh, it makes me as happy as a dog with two tails.

:-) .
