Laughter Clinic?

A friend asked me yesterday if I'd like to take part in a 'Laughter Clinic' if one is organized in London. It should be fun he said....and I thought how could it not be? :-) I've written about the the physiological benefits of laughter before in Have a Laugh but I've not attended a 'Laughter Clinic' run by a certified Laughter Therapist before! If one is set up in London I may well attend. When the group goes through controlled processes of each person manufacturing a Ho, Ho, Ho sound, or Ha, Ha, Ha, or He, He, He, various parts of our body and aspects of our emotions are affected and great healing can take place. Apparently the group invariably burst into uncontrollable and hysterical laughter and this takes over. Did you know there's a Laughter Network?

Laughter is something that many adults rarely do. Young children can laugh between 400-600 times a day, but to hear an adult chuckle can be a rare thing. Yet there are huge physiological benefits such as boosting our immune system, relieving pain, soothing tummy pain, relieving headaches as well as creating a wonderful 'feel-good' sensation. It's something that other creatures do not do, although some can appear to have a laugh! When we laugh our whole insides move with every Ha, Ha, Ha. It's sometimes referred to as 'jogging for the insides'. It's the biggest stress buster I know. The process of laughing and even smiling creates endorphins in our body, whether we are actually laughing for real, or just pretending. Our body responds similarly in both cases and releases this stress busting hormone that neutralises adrenalin which is a main cause of stress; one neutralises the other.

Part of me thinks that I do not need to go to a Laughter Clinic, fun as it would be. But if one is arranged in London I may well go! You know, we can benefit from the healing power of laughter by just having a jolly good laugh ourselves, anytime, anywhere. We can just let a real laugh come out whenever something is amusing. To open our throats and by letting it come from deep down inside can get all our insides 'jogging' to release lots of our own natural 'happy drug'; endorphins that make us feel good. Try to laugh often enough to total around 4-5 minutes a day. See how good you feel.

So I'm grateful to Terry for reminding me of the healing power of laughter when I'd temporarily forgotten in the process of dealing with some real-life dramas. Now after a few belly laughs I'm as happy as a bouncing baby, feeling in top form and ready for what today may bring.
