If we want to lead a stress-free life, despite being ultra-busy with work or family there are a number of things that we just need to do to support us. It's really quite simple, but so easy to forget or dodge something and gradually over a period of time the pressure can take its toll on our body and mind.
Just think, we are an incredibly sophisticated working biological working machine. As such it has requirements to ensure problem-free efficient working just as any mechanical piece of equipment needs fuel, servicing and regular maintenance. Being a living organism we require even more attention if we are to be ultra-efficient and stress free in today's hectic whirl of social and business demands. To not take care despite our busy lifestyle can lead to a whole range of health problems including cardiovascular disease, ulcers and digestive disorders.
It is relatively simple. We've just got to remember to:
Drink water - Our bodies are around 80% water so if we get dehydrated it just cannot work efficiently causing enormous stress and fatigue. Drink 2-3 litres a day and avoid caffeine and other diuretics.
Sleep - Get your full quota of sleep and have a mid-day nap if you can. We can increase productivity by 30% and alertness by 100% by a simple 15 minute nap. Chronic exhaustion will cause health problems and increase stress.
Exercise - gets the body moving, keeps you fit and creates endorphins that combat and diffuse stressful hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol.
Smile - smiling and laughing create endorphins, making us happy and combat stress. Smiling boosts the immune system.
Network - Have a network of colleagues and friends who can help you out when the going is tough. Spread the load by recruiting willing help and share responsibility.
Be positive - Have a positive outlook, believe you can achieve what you want.
Food - Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and less sugar, processed foods and caffeine.
Recreation - Give yourself plenty of 'down-time'. Stop. Relax. Recharge those batteries by doing fun things with lovers and friends.
Have a hug - A hug offers great relief from stress. Touch is the strongest of human experiences and a loving or friendly hug can do wonders for reducing cortisone levels.
We may be busy and feel that we can cope well despite not getting enough sleep, partying and pushing ourselves hard. But it can just take one small extra responsibility or stressful situation to send us over the top. Best make sure we are fighting fit. Look after your body as though it is the only one you've got! If you look after your health, it will look after you!
