If I were not a person, but a day in the calendar and today was 'My Day', then I think I'd have an identity crisis. Today is Shrove Tuesday in the UK, it is also Pancake Day (in the UK) and also Fat Day in Portuguese speaking countries, Mardi Gras or Tuesday of Carnival in historically Catholic and French-speaking parts of the United States. Thankfully in Polish speaking areas and Pennsylvania, celebrations of Tłusty Czwartek and Fasnacht Day are traditionally held on the Thursday before Lent, so this relieves me of some dilemma.
But whatever we call Tuesday 5th February 2008 and wherever we are, it seems that the thing to do is.....enjoy ourselves! So whether you celebrate with pancakes, King Cake in New Orleans or Censi sweet fried dumplings for Mardi Gras it seems like we should definitely get on with it! Pancakes probably originate from their solar symbolism of round shape and 'sun' colour. Pancakes also 'use up' eggs milk and sugar before the 40 days of fasting for Lent.
So, looking at my fridge I see some eggs that are definitely looking as though they need to be 'used up' despite being bought at the weekend. There is simply no way out of this.....we're just going to have to enjoy ourselves, whether we like it or not!!
Happy Mardi Gras, Pancake, Shrove Tuesday or whatever it is... I'm glad I don't need to decide.
