It was Snowdrop Sunday yesterday in the pretty hamlet of Swyncombe near Cookley Green, Oxfordshire which nestles in a hollow surrounded by the Chiltern Hills. Last year the event which is a celebration of this sweetest of flowers includes a blessing by the Vicar and most importantly tea and cakes being served from the porch of the pretty 11th century St Botolph's church. Last year they got rained off; the event was cancelled owing to the local farmer's field that is used as a temporary car park having turned into a bog. To ensure that the weather did not interfere this year, they are holding the event on every Saturday and Sunday throughout February!
What is it about snowdrops that makes them so pretty? The fresh and gentle white petalled heads that dangle like bells dance and bob in the breeze, they cluster around trees in the wild and particularly in their thousands in this pretty churchyard.
Thousands of people travel many miles to come and see these snowdrops. It's such a pretty sight. We always make a day of it by arriving around 10.00am and going for a 6-8 mile walk returning for a picnic lunch followed by plenty of cake and tea. Yum.
