Beyond the call of duty

My faith is restored in the kindness of human nature. Not that I'd ever lost it, but when something is offered unexpectedly after things seemed to have gone wrong, then there is all the more joy.

We have been disappointed that the stone slabs needed for our terrace at the Dorset house are no longer on the market. An possible alternative appears to be available from another company 30 miles away, but they could not deliver the samples to our house before the weekend. This means that despite travelling 300 miles tomorrow to meet our builders we still would not be able to make the decision on what stone to use. The suppliers are not open on Saturdays so we could not even go there to pick them up en-route to the house. Pain.

I called the architectural building supplies company again to ask if they could maybe leave the samples outside somewhere so we could collect them in the morning on our way to Dorset, but they weren't too happy about that. The receptionist who by now I have discovered is called Fiona is trying hard to help us; she had an alternative idea.

Saturday mornings are when she takes her kids to football practice. But as we would be passing near Yeovil in Somerset on our way to our house she offered to meet us.

So today we have been to the chocolate shop nearby to my office, we will meet dear Fiona in the car park of Tesco Supermarket in Yeovil at 8.30am. She will have the samples of stone slabs in the boot of her car so we can transfer them to ours. Hey Presto. Then she takes the kids to football and we get the chance to select the best stone for our job.

I tell you, it's such a good world when people go out of their way to help you when they really have no obligation or need to do so. Thank you, Fiona. Thank you world.

I hope she likes chocolate.
